About

Through weekly literary readings at the Midtown Cinema's Reel Cafe, special event readings, poetry slams, workshops, and publications, the Almost Uptown Poetry Cartel seeks to grow and enhance awareness of Pennsylvania's literary and artistic community.

In 2010, the Reel Cafe will feature performers like Shaashawn Dial, Phillip Wheeler, Griselda Garcia and Esteban Charpentier, and more as we celebrate both a return to our Midtown roots and eleven years of poetry hi-jinx

A recent open reading at the Reel Cafe.

Our PoetryThursdays reading series is celebrating its ten-year anniversary in 2009. That series, a cartel mainstay since 1999, began in a small coffeehouse on 3rd Street, in Midtown, near Nick's Cafe, and continued through numerous downtown venues.

Most recently, we were at the Crimson Frog coffeehouse in the Cedar Cliff Mall. But now, we're home again. And doggone happy to be here. You come too.

Versification scientists have ascertained that all the poems we've read, every week, over an eleven-year span, if laid end-to-end, could stretch to the moon and back. Really-- do the math.

Poetry events, all open to the public, are happening every Thursday at the Reel Cafe at the Midtown Cinema, 250 Reily St. More info: (717) 909-6566.

The Harrisburg Midtown area is experiencing an exciting cultural Renaissance and, by golly, we're excited and proud to be part of it. You come too. Be part of an exciting time in literary history. Our reading is free and open to the public. Read out loud, taste the words, share your favorite poets, or your original poetry and prose.

Listen, read. Engage. C'mon out-- join in the excitement. We need your spirit, your voice, your support, to make this work.

See you Thursday!?
